DENDROSEISMOLOGY

Dendroseismology is the application to paleoseismology intended as study of active faults capable to damage trees by their displacement. The effects of the fault displacement on the vegetation can be different, but essentially concerns the roots’ cut or denuding, tilted trunks (fig. 1 – Irpinia fault – South Italy) or in other cases it manifests as compressions along the trunk (fig. 2 – Turkey fault) or even with heavy damage to the trunk which has been cut in parts by the fault (fig. 3 – Turkey fault). The laboratory has performed studies on active faults in Irpinia (South Italy) and along the North Anatolian Fault in Turkey (Zone of Dudce and Mudurnu).
